Guarding Our Hearts

Let not mercy and truth forsake you;
Bind them around your neck,
Write them on the tablet of your heart...
Proverbs 3:3

If we know anything about God's holy and living word, then we know there are profound meanings and layers of precept that are never exhausted. This proverb is urging us to not to forsake mercy and truth - that they should be evident in our Christian life. Even further it is admonishing us to keep the wisdom, doctrines and ordinances of Christ.

What of this tablet of the heart though? What an unusual expression!

According to Gill it means to... "not forget them [Gods commands], keep them in memory, and always retain a hearty affection for them; it is the Spirit's work to write them in the heart; and when they are there written, it is the work of saints, under a divine influence, to copy them over in life, and to show by their conduct and behavior that they are written there."

My son, do not forget my law, But let your heart keep my commands... Proverbs 3:1

Many scoff at the idea of the heart being anything more than an internal organ. Some will concede to the notion of the heart being an expression of love but look what science has discovered...

"Research shows that the heart considers and "thinks" about information received from the brain. This implies the heart has opinions of its own. It acts as a still, small voice checking our thoughts for accuracy, integrity and wisdom. The "mini-brain" of the heart literally functions like a conscience." *

I love it when science confirms God's word. Is it any wonder that God tells us to store up his word in our hearts? We are most certainly fearfully and wonderfully made. If we would only trust and believe that what He tells us is for our own good. Let's make sure our hearts are not hardened to the voice of God's word.

They made their hearts diamond-hard lest they should hear the law and the words that the Lord of hosts had sent by his Spirit through the former prophets. Therefore great anger came from the Lord of hosts. Zechariah 7:12

Let our hearts be good ground to receive the word of God.

For the word of God is living and powerful, and sharper than any two-edged sword, piercing even to the division of soul and spirit, and of joints and marrow, and is a discerner of the thoughts and intents of the heart. Hebrews 4:12

Keep your heart with all diligence, For out of it spring the issues of life. Proverbs 4:23

We have much to be thankful for. I want to fill my heart with God's word on a daily basis, don't you?!

Let the word of Christ dwell in you richly in all wisdom, teaching and admonishing one another in psalms and hymns and spiritual songs, singing with grace in your hearts to the Lord. And whatever you do in word or deed, do all in the name of the Lord Jesus, giving thanks to God the Father through Him. Colossians 3:16-17
